FAQ

THE PAGE WILL BE THE RESOURCE FOR FAQ

  1. Do you even wash dreadlocks? A) There is very much a misconception about how to look after or create dreadlocks, healthy dreads are created and maintained by washing them yes hair locks up better when it is washed .Dirty hair is greasy and will actually inhibit the locking up , i recommend regular washing and dry the hair thoroughly  between washes, i recommend that you use a organic shampoo preferably  not tested on animals and a low residue shampoo. So the next time some asks you if you wash your locs, please set them straight.
  2. Can dreadlocks be combed out?A) Yes of course they can be combed out, this does however need a great deal of patience , depending on how old your locks are they may take from 30- 40 mins per dread to over an hour per dread, so i guess the decision the get them to start with should be carefully considered as to avoid unwanted dreads made in a rushed decision, yes they are a big commitment to start with , my advice would be to do your research first!
  3. Why no wax? A) Wax, like the “don’t wash” myth is a concept that i don’t endorse, the method i use” The Dread-shed method has no need for wax.The idea that dreads need wax ,i guess comes from the idea that you need to hold the dreads together, NOT TRUE. With the method i use, dreads are more mature from their initial creation, wax in dreads  can lead to issues with excess lint, dirt and other contaminants , these things can and will work there way into the locks and  also create a coating on the locks that is a magnet to dirt and other nastie’s. So i like to explain it in these terms , imagine if you coated for hair in condensed milk and then rolled in coconut flakes, now that’s a visual for you!!! .Wax is also an inhibitor to locs maturing by keeping the grease and grim in the loc , stay away from wax its also very hard to properly remove once in the dreads.
  4. What method is the best?A) There are a few methods, but however i only use and recommend the Dread-shed method to create and maintain, this method is a great method that gives more mature looking dreads from the onset, really there is no comparison. Other methods are twist and rip, back combing, neglect, interlocking. These can be sourced on you tube if your looking to find out.
  5. Why should i bother with maintenance A) Maintenance in my opinion is an essential part of the dreadlock journey, this helps keep dreads neat and stops unwanted congo’s.
  6. My dreads are starting to frizz out! How long will this process take?-Relax! Its perfectly normal! After installing a fresh set of dreads, or even doing maintenance, you will notice the dreads loosening a little bit and a few loose hairs escaping. Over time, some of these hairs will pull themselves back in to the dreads, and the locks will continue to grow on their own. To help tame the frizz and to keep the dreads growing separately, I suggest that you pull the dreads apart from each-other at the root, and roll each dread between the palm of your hands to help keep them in the proper shape. The more you separate and roll the dreads, the quicker they will lock up. Most people would have to wait YEARS for this process, but with proper upkeep and semi-regular maintenance sessions (every 3-12 weeks), this process can be sped up dramatically.
  7. What products can I use in my hair?-You can use a sea-salt infusion in the place of hairspray to help hold the hair in place. To make this infusion, you add roughly 1 part sea salt to 5 parts water, let the salt fully dissolve, then put the solution in a spray bottle. When you apply this solution to your hair, do not apply too much as to soak the dreads, only spray a little amount to help you to lay down the frizzy hairs. You can also add a little amount of a scented oil to this infusion. I suggest tea tree or eucalyptus as the are clean and fresh scents. Be careful with adding these oils, the result can be a heavy scent that is unpleasant to some people.
