Dreadlocks a brief history

When it comes to growing and maintaining dreadlocks, there are a lot of myths and misinformation floating around. I would like to take some time to address and debunk them. So sit back while I discuss 5 common myths about dreadlocks.

#1: They are dirty and can’t be washed
This is probably the most common myth that is spread by people who simply have NO CLUE what they are talking about. Not only can you wash your dreadlocks, you HAVE to. It is recommended that you wash your dreadlocks at least once a week. Not doing so can actually ruin them.

#2: You get them by not combing or caring for your hair
This another myth that is not only negative in nature but is also completely false. Perhaps this is the way that it was done wayyyy back in the day. The days of the caveman. It is called the neglect method and people who do it this way usually end up with a messy tangle of hair that doesn’t even resemble dreadlocks. Not to mention a mean case of dandruff. These days, there are plenty of methods that you can use to neatly and purposefully grow your form, grow, and maintain a head full of lovely dreadlocks. These methods include, but are not limited to backcombing, twist and rip, twist and pin, twisting, dread braiding, and brush rubbing.

#3: They are too high maintenance
This is another one that is not true. There IS one method of dreading called the dread perm that does require a bit more maintenance than usual. However, the methods that I mentioned above are all fairly low maintenance.

FAIRY REALM DREADLOCKS- NEVER RECOMMENDS DREADLOCK PERMING

#4: The only way to get rid of them is to cut them/shave your head
A lot of people believe that if you get dreads you are either going to have them forever or you will have to cut them out if you want to go back to how your hair was before. Not true! Although some people do opt to cut all of their hair off, that is not the only option. You can also soak your hair in conditioner and comb it out.

#5: Only rastafarians can wear dreadlocks
Dreadlocks are something that were worn long before Rastafarianism. You do not have to be a rasta to rock them!
