Methods Of Making Dreadlocks You Should avoid
A TIMELY WARNING: So you want to get Dreadies /Dreadlocks/Locs /Elf Locs/ Witches Knots /Dreads / Fairy Locs and so on and so forth….. Ok for all you soon to be or just researching , Dreaming about dreads. I have same information to share. The aesthetical appearance and maintenance workload of your crowning glory (your dreads) for years to come is hugely dependant and mainly attributed to how you choose have them made. I strongly recommend avoiding the following ways and here is why!
Backcombing
The standard/commonly know method of making dreadlocks
The standard/commonly know method of making dreadlocks (we call backcombing) this method relies on wax to keep them together, is can be painful, time consuming, often expensive and takes a lot of time and effort on your part. Also another method similar to this is the twist and rip , this is where you would section the hair, backcomb slightly and then pull apart that section into two sections whilst twisting to form knots and repeat this process twisting and pulling in random pieces as you go, also time consuming and leaves very puffy, dreads which do unravel. Wax is also commonly used here.
Wax is sticky by nature and attracts dirt and fluff (giving dreadlocks a bad name)Sometimes/Most often the dirt and fluff lodged in waxed dreads doesn’t dislodge for years (if at all) giving your dreads a dull, grubby, greasy appearance. Further more, wax blocks the pores in your scalp which means your skin can’t breathe and can lead to scalp irritation, as well it certainly gets on everything!!!! Your face, hats or scarves, pillow slips, helmets, clothing and couch.
Your dreads will not be instant and can often take a year or two of rolling and waxing to tighten and neaten. Ultimately, (unless you obsessively palm roll) you never know how much your dreads will shrink and widen and what style or shape you will end up with.
Another common method of making dreads
Another common method of making dreadlocks ( I have no idea what you would call this method) so I shall refer to it as pipe cleaner chaos, with is method you wrap them in pipe cleaners and drench them in perming solution (a toxic chemical). This solution (especially when overdone) can break your hair right off, damage and irritate your scalp and stay lodged in your dreads and close to your skin for a long time. Chemically induced dreads often never achieve a lustrous, full bodied , natural appearance.
In my experience and research within this industry , I have seen and heard of people employing desperate measures to achieve dreads. Some aspiring dread- heads have saturated the hair /dreads ( Loosely using that term here! ) with honey, peanut paste/butter, coconut milk and iced tea, staples, rubber bands, wood glue, glue from a hot glue gun, surfboard wax, tooth paste, string and wire, bleach and ash, clay ,sand and I’ve even heard of someone using wood varnish. Its no wonder dreads have a reputation for being dirty, messy and high maintenance.
Why risk, potential permanent damage to your hair and scalp or put up with all this when you can have instant, natural chemical free, clean, good looking ,sexy dreads with less cost, time and trouble?
At Fairy Realm Dreadlocks Studio I’ve been trained By The Dread Shed Dreadlocks Owner /Lecturer Sam Price, like all my Dread Shed colleagues across Australia.
Dreadlock Repair
I can fix just about anything!!!! Mess and fuzz, regrowth, breakage, hair loops, dreads that are (congoing) joining together at the base, undreaded hair and weak points, holes, loose ends. It is also possible to re-structure your dreads from the scalp so they don’t join together and strengthen the body of your dread so it doesn’t break off.
Repairing chemically damaged dreads is also possible depending on the level of damage (if you have waxed dreads, give them a good wash before coming to see me).If you are unhappy with the dreads you’ve had made elsewhere , I can unpick and remake your dreads( however this is time comsuming )
Dreadlock Maintenance
I will happily maintain the body, end or base of your dreadlock. I use only my hands and a tiny crochet hook for all the maintenance work and I work swiftly and effectively. Sensitivity of your scalp can be an issue, for some people this can range from mild discomfort to outright pain. The hook pulls hairs close to your scalp. Others hardly feel a thing ,this method gives a smoother appearance. The crochet method, if done incorrectly or roughly has a reputation for breaking or damaging the dreads. However, when done correctly it is an excellent method and as the dread grows out creates an even, smooth, tight dreadlock body. I can crochet all your regrowth and loose hair which is perfect for really round, neat dreads.
